Yesterday evening (Monday 23rd January) we held a screening of the documentary film Living with Fracking followed by a Q&A with the film’s producers, Steve and Jo White.
The husband and wife team decided to take a trip to Pennsylvania, USA, after they learned that fracking (high volume hydraulic fracturing) could be coming to their area of Ryedale.
Armed with a video camera, they travelled around the heavily fracked state and met a number of people whose lives have been affected by fracking. They wanted to be able to share what they saw and heard during their trip with the people of Ryedale and others back home in the UK – for them to see the reality of living with fracking.
They retraced the journey made by their local MP, Kevin Hollinrake, who visited the state in September 2015, and afterwards reported that he was reassured about fracking.
The experience documented by the Whites tells a very different story. From parents fighting to prevent a gas company from fracking underneath a school, to a retired doctor having to spend $90,000+ on legal fees to try to get recompense for nearby fracking devaluing his house and for the impact on his life after his drinking water became contaminated.
We were also pleased to be joined by the very knowledgable Dr Tim Thornton from Ryedale, who gave a talk on the dangers of fracking to health. You can read Dr Thornton’s blog at www.isfrackingsafe.com
